The Tom Hill Archives

The Los Olivos Wine & Spirits Emporium presents the musings and reflections of Tom Hill. We think it's great that Tom, who has sampled so many wines, has shared his tasting notes with us. We do have, or have had for sale a few of the wines Tom writes about, and we include a link to our stock page whenever it is a producer we carry (but since the stock page is kept up-to-date and the wines are sold, don't expect any but the newest of wines to show up in our stock!). Mostly though, since we specialize in County of Santa Barbara Wine and Central Coast Wine, we don't carry a lot of the wines Tom writes about. But we think it is important that you be able to have an idea what they're like in case you are planning to buy some somewhere, or have them in your own collection. Enjoy.

Here are Tom's notes from 9/23/98:

Say, what.... not ANOTHER bloody pulpit:
  1. The two Aussie Shiraz, compliments of Howard & Rhoda Sherry, were terrific. With age, the Henschke, according to Howard, has lost most of the overwhelming oak that those wines tend to display. The Elderton..... dynamite stuff; and still very young.
  2. Do Viogniers age??? Stupid question, though the authorities, whoever they are ('tain't I!) all seem to believe they do not. Depends upon, I think, what you expect of an older Viognier. If you expect that effusive floral fruitiness of young Viognier/Condrieu; then you'll be disappointed. I find in some older Viognier a very interesting caramelized/nutty/slightly oxidized character much like what you find in old WhiteBurgundy.... a wine the authorities DO know can age well. Perhaps they should be a bit more opened-minded when it comes to older Viogniers. The Phelps was not very attractive on the palate, but it was by no means a dead wine.... a bit Chablis/Loire-like in character. The Vernay was awfully interesting old white wine.
  3. The Duxoup Syrah: This winery started in 1981, making Gamay, Syrah, and Zin. The seem to do a lot of whole-berry fermentations & produce very grapey/fruity types of wines; their winemaking pretty much obliterates their varietal character of teir wines, I find. When this wine came out (mid-'80's), we had had glimpses of future  greatness in Syrah from the '77-'78 EstrellaRiver Syrahs by Gary Eberle, but not yet seen a really great Calif Syrahs (the first Qupe was coming out then, also). So I was excited to try this Duxoup when I stumbled across it. Major disappointment.... loads of grapey Beaujolais character & not much Syrah. So I had very low expectations going into this tasting for this Duxoup. It had held up much better than I expected, but still nothing great.
  4. Some pretty incredible complex mature Rhones here in this tasting. The Eberle, the Cigar Volant, the Clape Cornas, the Champet Cote-Rotie, the two Aussies.... all pretty amazing juice. You'all shoulda been there.
