The Bernard Roth Archives

The Los Olivos Wine & Spirits Emporium presents notes of Bernard Roth who always has something to say, particularly about wine and food.

We happy that Bernard, who has sampled so many wines, has shared his notes with us. We do have, or have had for sale a few of the wines Bernard writes about, and we include a link to our stock page whenever it is a producer we carry (but since the stock page is kept up-to-date and the wines are sold, don't expect any but the newest of wines to show up in our stock!). Mostly though, since we specialize in County of Santa Barbara Wine and Central Coast Wine, we don't carry a lot of the wines Bernard writes about. But we think it is important that you be able to have an idea what they're like in case you are planning to buy some somewhere, or have them in your own collection. Enjoy.

Here are Bernard's notes from November 26, 1998:

Thanksgiving Day

Couple of Thanksgiving Day wines:

92 Foxen Sanford & Benedict Vyd. Pinot Noir--Murky, light ruby.  Initially muted nose hinting of earth, violets, plum. Medium weight texture, high acid, still good tannic support. Rather elegant. Raspberry, mushroom, integrated toasty oak. Seemless balance, but not quite harmonious flavor profile. Bright, fruity finish with some lingering tannins, bit bitter, oaky ending. Some stewed fruit, tomato flavors. Flavors a bit muddled. This did not live up to its apparent promise when first tasted in 94. 87-. Nevertheless, because of the high acidity and earthy flavors, it was a pretty decent food match to roast pintade with porcini bread crumb crust. Drink up.

90 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling BA--Dark gold.  Light botrytis, petrol, butterscotch. Round, rather low acid, honey, tangerine, nectarine. Finish is uninteresting, too short, low acid. Disappointing and not worth the ~$60 price for the half-bottle. Fortunately, I wasn't the buyer. 88.
