The Bernard Roth Archives

The Los Olivos Wine & Spirits Emporium presents notes of Bernard Roth who always has something to say, particularly about wine and food.

We happy that Bernard, who has sampled so many wines, has shared his notes with us. We do have, or have had for sale a few of the wines Bernard writes about, and we include a link to our stock page whenever it is a producer we carry (but since the stock page is kept up-to-date and the wines are sold, don't expect any but the newest of wines to show up in our stock!). Mostly though, since we specialize in County of Santa Barbara Wine and Central Coast Wine, we don't carry a lot of the wines Bernard writes about. But we think it is important that you be able to have an idea what they're like in case you are planning to buy some somewhere, or have them in your own collection. Enjoy.

Here are Bernard's notes from March 24, 2002:

Dinner at NU

A bunch of out-of-towners and I got together at Restaurant NU in Santa Barbara last weekend. Food was terrific and these are the wines were had:

00 D. Dagueneau Pur Sang Pouilly-Fume—Bit closed aromatically. Tropical fruit, cat pee, pineapple, honey. Elegant finish. 89 (+?)

75 Ch. Climens—Bit closed. Light botrytis. Elegant, moderate viscosity. Complex, but lacking cut. Tastes youthful. 91

94 Deiss Pinot Gris VT Bergheim—No nose. Medium sweet, crystalline palate. Lovely guava, peach. Delicate finish. Good with the foie gras. 88

93 de L’Arlot Vosne-Romanee Suchots 1er Cru—Slight TCA on cork, bit of mustiness in wine, lightly corked. Some sauvage elements, mushroom. Acidic, sour cherry, light weight. Would be ~88 without the taint. TCA was more overwhelming next day.

99 d’Angerville Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru—Lovely cherry, oak bouquet. Velvety, black raspberry, cocoa. Good finish. 91+

94 Il Palazzino Grosso Sanese—Dried cherry, turning funky. Tasty, succulent cherry, aged meat. Balanced. 88

79 Kistler Cabernet—Stinky, dry cherry compote. Sweet fruit, leather, shoe polish. Hot finish, but not bad for such an old one. 88

78 Simi Alexander Valley Cab—Raunchy stink, oxidized. Pretty bad, OTH. <50

87 Montelena Cab—Classic nose for Napa cab. Pure, elegant, lush. Very fine. 92

88 Lynch Bages—Too young, primary. Lotta tannins. Needs 15 years. 87(+?)

78 Spring Mountain Cab—Remarkable, rich, alive, classic old style CA cab. Chewy, boysenberry, cherry. Bit oxidized in finish. 89-

81 Dunn Howell Mountain Cab—Corked. Tannic. NR

95 Tatachilla Shiraz—Sweet, thick, briny. Not especially interesting. 87

73 Diamond Creek Red Rock Terrace—Sweet, lovely nose of cherry chocolate. Faded fruit, soft, low acid, low tannin. Past prime. 85

86 Ch. Suduiraut—Bright, modest botrytis. Complex, good bite, bitter almond. Should probably improve with more age. 92(+?)

96 Kracher Chardonnay TBA #8—Light botrytis. Soft, viscous, bitter orange marmalade, macadamia nuts, butterscotch. Could use more acid. 93.
